9/22 - HW Quotes

John Berger

“Publicity persuades us of such a transformation by showing us people who have apparently been transformed, and are, as a result. Enviable.”

“Being envied is a solitary form of reassurance.”

As I read about Berger's take on publicity and advertisement, these two quotes struck me as a two-for-one deal. The concept of envy, and being at the center of that, would make a person a token or personified status to be achieved by others, and accidentally or not, that is a feeling some people like.

Susan Sontag

“There is an aggression implicit in every use of the camera.”

To use a camera is to take a gamble on what frame of life you’re willing to capture in the name of art. The aggression in fighting to get the right shot, with all of your visual settings correct, is real, and I experience this whenever I try to get a good shot of even the most stationary of things.

“Photographs really are experience captured, and the camera is the ideal arm of consciousness in its acquisitive mood.”

100% agree on this - I believe that photography is one of the most important art forms because not only is it art, but it is a time capsule that the photographers before us worked hard to perfect and ensure a piece of time can be held in your hand, even if you were not present.
