John Berger "Ways of Seeing" and Susan Sontag "On Photography"

"Publicity is, in essence, nostalgic. It has to sell the past to the future. It cannot itself supply the standards of its own claims. And so all its references to quality are bound to be retrospective and traditional. It would lack both confidence and credibility if it used a strictly contemporary language."

"All publicity works upon anxiety. The sum of everything is money, to get money is to overcome anxiety. Alternatively, the anxiety on which publicity plays is the fear that having nothing you will be nothing."

Both of these quotes are very eye-opening because I can agree and relate to the information stated in the sentences. Publicity wouldn't matter as much if whatever happened in the past that benefitted people couldn't benefit people in the future. If the invention of computers in the past did not benefit people in more ways than one, then it would not have been publicized widespread in the national economy. People are aware of what's available now, but are unaware of how it may or may not benefit them in the future, while things that have happened in the past have a known outcome of whether they are beneficial or not. All publicity truly works off of anxiety. I am experiencing the effects of this personally now, as do everyone because we are all exposed to publicity.

"Photographs furnish evidence. Something we hear about, but doubt, seems proven when we're shown a photograph of it. In another version of its utility, the camera record justifies. A photograph passes for incontrovertible proof that a given thing happened. The picture may distort; but there is always a presumption that something exists, or did exist, which is like what's in the picture."

"The subsequent industrialization of camera technology only carried out a promise inherent in photography from its very beginning: to democratize all experiences by translating them into images."

Presently, it seems like all things said are backed by a photo or video recording. It is true, photos prove that a thing happened once whether it was how the photo portrayed it did or not. Cameras can be utilized in many beneficial ways, one being to provide evidence for a situation. Cameras can also be invasive because any and all experiences can be photographed due to easy camera accessibility and can be made accessible for any one to view.
