Title - The Interventions: Trespassing Towards Relevance

Quotes

1."The effect, if not always the original intent, of advanced branding is to nudge the hosting culture into the background and make the brand the star. It is not to sponsor culture but to be the culture.

2. “You can’t be a revolutionary today without a television set – it’s as important as a gun! Every guerilla must know how to use the terrain of culture that he is trying to destroy"

Response - Sometimes big brands will push out the culture and put it into the back where it will not be noticed and then replace it and then say it is the original culture. People today can learn much about the world just from their living room by watching the news. It is their tool that they can use for their fight to bring about change. However, sometimes media can change what really happens in a story or article.

Title - Understanding Patriarchy

Quotes

1. "The word "patriarchy" just is not part of their everyday thought or speech. Men who have heard and know the word usually associate with women's liberation, with feminism, and therefore dismiss it as irrelevant to their own experiences."

2. "When I responded with rage at being denied a toy, I was taught as a girl in a patriarchal household that rage was not a feminine felling that it should be not only not expressed but eradicated"

Response -

I have heard of the word patriarchy before in chickens in which the rooster is the one in charge of all the females. In our human society many people believe in this because many people see the male as the strongest and the most well able to protect. I think denying kids and even people of their feelings is completely wrong. We as humans should be able to express every feeling in a well controlled manner. Kids especially should be taught that all feelings are good and for parents to recognize those feelings and have a conversation with their kids about those feelings regardless of their gender. No feeling should not be not expressed nor eradicated, it should be expressed.

Paul Nicklen is a Canadian photographer and marine biologist, currently working for National Geographic magazine. His work captures the beauty of nature while documenting wildlife and the effects of climate change. His evoking images show the devastating impacts humanity has had on the planet, from polar bears  to melting ice caps. His shots are stunning and take a lot of work, from trekking through remote areas to scuba diving under ice. His work is a good example of what is happening in our world with our sea life that are very crucial to the Earth. His photos capture the details of what is happening with our animals in the world due to climate change. Most people do not like taking about this issue and just brush it aside however, we need to recognize what we are doing to our home planet.

His work is very inspiring and motivating because he shows genuine care for sea life.  He is a co-founder of a non-profit called SeaLegacy. I like his work because as a kid I was always watching documentaries about sea life and watching programs on the Discovery channel. I would always love to read books about sea life and found it so interesting learn about the many species that live in our ocean.

My name is Brian Vargas. I am currently a junior and I am majoring in Computer Science. Like I explained above as a kid I was always reading about wildlife and sealife as a kid as I found it very interesting to learrn about all these animals in our world. I am glad that their are people in this world who truly care about our wildlife and are trying to make a change and hopefully wake some people up to what is happening.
