Short Essay: Gallery Visit Paige Bishop

I chose the artwork Fibroids, 2021 created by Agnieszka Wszolkowksa. I chose this piece because it really caught my eye with the bold, red circles that represent the tumors that women develop in our fibroids. It is common for women to develop these tumors yet we are told to stay quiet about it.

What I got from this piece was that women suffer from a lot of problems and men do not understand what we really go through. Women suffer emotional turmoil often because the health care system, which does not often take us seriously about what may be wrong with our bodies. We know it better than you. Furthermore, in this piece, we can see the order in which the tumors come about. First, they develop, linger a bit inside us, before being removed but they always come back. It shows that our healthcare system could do better for us and find a way to help permanently get rid of these tumors.

I do not believe this is an act of activism. Why? It really isn't drawing attention to anything in particular. Without the description of this piece, I would not have been able to figure out what the red bits were.

I also chose the piece created by Christine DaCruz. As stated by DaCruz, "This series is a reflection on healing, being vulnerable, and being honest." This is a strong statement to me. Nobody wants to be vulnerable about themselves, in front of others. She opened up about her emergency surgery and taking care of her mother in another country. I like black and white pictures with embroidery because the colors pop out and showcase the healing process she is going through. I believe this is activism because it showcases that the healing process of anything is hard and slow and there could be dark days along the way.
