Social media is not entirely bad, it can bring positive aspects to life. It has made it easier for people to get involved and engaged with the world around them. One of the upsides to having so much at your fingertips is the ability to create relationships with people that have the same interests as you from all over the world. Overall, there are a lot of ups and downs when it comes to social media and technology as a whole, but they can create a lot of controversies. We’re always being watched so it would make sense that companies would work hard to make platforms so addictive.
Platforms such as Instagram and TikTok have made it easy for anyone to post whatever they want when they want. Their platform algorithm is set up in a way that just sucks you right back in. Seconds turn to minutes and minutes turn to hours… just being on an app. We spend all that time on our phones and become completely oblivious because we're not seeing the bigger picture … we think we're just having fun but what's going on in the background? Our spending habits, our hobbies, and our personal lives are all out in the open for anyone to see. It can even be sold to outside companies for targeted marketing and get us to spend more money on those reasons previously mentioned.
Instagram has really been trying to help the issue in other ways. But because it's owned by meta, it’s questionable, but, the good that Instagram is trying to do, is put forth their feature that alerts you when you have caught up with all the posts you've seen, they also have a feature to let you know how long you've been on the app. Many platforms are wonderful, but with great power comes great responsibility. Unfortunately, people, at times, use the platforms for selfish reasons and most of the time it turns them weak when it comes to tech and just gives in and even uses it as a way to flaunt their money in our faces... But at the end of the day, social media companies shouldn't be listening in on what type of donut I'm craving and showing it to me on my timeline. It's creepy…It's ruining the fun of posting about that said donut.
