This is FAVIANNA RODRIGUEZ  Her art addresses migration, gender justice, climate change, racial equity, and sexual freedom. She's a very swag lady. Here is some of her work.
Shes very passionate about ending the gender binary and in having expansive conversations about how we talk about gender and it  reflects her broad worldview around gender justice.

this one got to me because she said during covid this was her way of easing to the healing journey. she moved into right relationship with her body and learned to listen to it more.

This is my selfie inspired by her work.

"Automatic"

                                                            “Automatic”

My mother says something constantly to my siblings and I and it goes something like this, “you guys just think sh*t is automatic!”. She says that because we all can sometimes take advantage (not in a good way) of all the good we have around us. Food, water, a roof over our heads, good health, etc. and when we’re showered with these things every day, we can lose sight of how precious they are, and they can feel almost “automatic”. I say this to point out that we constantly indulging in consumption and that may be the case because we all may feel that sh*t is automatic! We have food delivery apps, grocery delivery apps, apps for all our needs and especially our wants. Visiting the art gallery made me ponder on the whole idea of overconsumption and how I partake in it every day.

I could identify a piece of me in almost each piece of art at the gallery whether it be something I witnessed or personally engage in. The show was very eye-opening and informative, connecting overconsumption to plastic waste, pollution, and other global issues as well as political issues. One of the projects that I found especially joyous was made by Maggie Ens and her pieces named “GAIA Calls Us to Healing” and “Bench For the New American Renaissance”. Maggie says in artists’ statement “GAIA, our Mother Earth, is increasingly challenged by humanity’s misuse of her riches.” Basic consumption must take place in some form to make this world of ours operate every day, but overconsumption is where we go wrong and cause conflict for ourselves and our planet. But how has it gotten this way? Ens expresses how her muse helps her address overconsumption by saying “My Muse nudges me to address the cycle of capitalism’s destructive power to overly produce, endlessly consume and thoughtlessly squander Nature’s gifts.” I couldn’t help but think about John Berger’s writing on publicity and how society is trained, or some may say, brain-washed to seeing things in a specific way helping us gravitate toward overconsumption. Why do we have publicity? Publicity exists so that manufacturers can continue to produce and make money which entails us, consumers, to over consume. Maggie Ens’ inspiration, execution, and the materials used by her all express her want for healing and restoration of balance to our home.

Bringing the light of overconsumption to not just an object but a living human being was one subject that I never had deeply thought about before. The subject is multi-layered and as I began to read Mollie Thonneson’s artist statement, I couldn’t help but to dive deep into the subject. Thonneson’s project included pieces made from recycled lingerie and party dresses portrays the “narrative about abusive relationships and what role our consumer society plays in perpetuating that aggressive behavior”. Mollie’s pieces not only talk about sexual abuse, but child sexual abuse presenting a piece called “Just Close Your Eyes” which uses recycled lingerie fit for children. I began thinking about patriarchy and the possibility of an overconsumption of that belief. Can one believe that the consumption of people is acceptable because they feel more dominant than them? The answer to this question has portrayed itself through history and present-day that they most definitely can. We live in a system of patriarchy “that insists males are inherently dominating, superior to everything and everyone deemed weak, especially females, and endowed with the right to dominate and rule over the weak and to maintain the dominance through various forms of psychological terrorism and violence”. If one is consumed by the thoughts and/or feelings that they can and must express dominance over the weaker can quickly poison them into consuming that being. Mollie Thonneson refers to our culture and economy as “a culture obsessed with self-gratification and power, and an economy fueled on appealing to our base instincts as sexual beings” and this statement cannot be any less from the truth. A culture concerned with power instead of building each other up. We’re all concerned for our personal success and happiness all the time that we’re less interested about what gets damaged along the way.

I’ve began to think about overconsumption differently these last few days mostly because of my current mental state. I began to tie in overconsumption to my personal and questioning if whether I am a part of the cause and ones of the effects. Up until the middle of my senior year, I would be awakened by my parents for school in the mornings. Taken to school by my parents and picked up afterwards. Showered with all their everything. I had consumed them as a part of me. I had consumed all their assistance, support, and love, but then something happened. You realize that you are growing up and they realize that too, and now, you are in charge of you. So, I have been thinking, can a child overconsume their parents’ love and affection? Can that be why some people have a difficult time jumpstarting their life and leaving the nest? I can guarantee that the answer is yes, but I truly want to know, what is the solution?

Gallery Exhibition Essay

“When autumn darkness falls, what we will remember are the small acts of kindness: a cake, a hug, an invitation to talk, and every single rose. These are all expressions of a nation coming together and caring about its people.” Jens Stoltenberg

When we think of cake we typically begin to think of birthdays, celebrations, happy moments, etc. To many other people, it is not just bout the happy moments and memories that are created and brought abroad through a delicious cake. Sometimes it is about the stories each cake tells and its representation to one’s own. Art comes in many shapes and sizes, but it is not always just about the size of a cake, but what it signifies. To be able to express art through baking and bring to life not only my own creations but the many storytellings and emotion of others. Cake has a great way of portraying the many amounts of what we consider art. Art in itself is an experience, whether it is creating the cake or even viewing it.

50 Shades of Grey? No, 50 Shades of Cake. Artist, Nancy Buchanan has created an abundance of art pieces that speak to political and social issues. Buchanan created many grayscaled cakes and pastries. Upon looking at these photos one would question why a cake would be colored in such a dim color, yet become fascinated and want to know more. When you first look at these photos you are fixated on the colors that are presented, yet the flowers that are peeking throughout this cake. I feel as though even though there could be subtle darkness it would not outcast the bright things in this case the flowers.

This project helps illustrate some points we have been discussing media images and identity because when we first look at images we tend to look at what is being portrayed and not necessarily what the origin and the background surrounding the images mean. These cakes have a gloomy presence and to me, it shows that it has a negative connotation. One of which might be the immense amount of sugary foods we consume. When we look at the many social media images, especially women, we tend to see people judge them based on what they look like. For example, Lizzo has been judged her whole career as of now because she is bigger than other artists. They would continue to judge someone because they see on the outside, but fail to realize there are layers to what a person goes through. When we look at cake we tend to look for sophistication. According to, Cake is How Memes Are Making Protest Art More Powerful, “The beauty of Dance’s sign lies in its simplicity”.

A late introduction!

Keith haring!

Hi! My name is Patricia and I’m choosing Keith haring as my activist artist. He rose to fame with his subway drawings and outspoken work on the AIDs crisis during the 80’s. The use of simple imagery and words made his style iconic. But the tool that makes his activism so powerful is the use of art in public space.
My own relationship to art became serious when I realized the art I wanted to create was accessible and public. Long before I learned about artists like Haring and so many others that valued art as a form of communication and universal experience.
I’m an illustration major and would love to get into murals and tattooing. I think both are artworks that connect us in a community or individual level to our own artistic experience.

Covid 19 Vaccination Poster

Social protests have always been seen as a menace to the government or as a rebellious movement upon society. This is not the case when the greater good of all the people is in mind. In this case we are promoting getting vaccinated in the poster created above. The poster illustrates big bold colorful letters to catch the viewer's attention. In addition to the lettering I have added images as every audience is targeted differently. In this case the pictures might promote the right message to the people that getting vaccinated is safe and easy as illustrated on the picture on the right bottom corner. In addition to that I have added an arrow where it points to the sign up now.

This would have had a link that directed to the government website to find the nearest vaccinated spot. However this could not be done as the poster is a drawing and when printed out to pass around it would not serve its useful purpose. Another method was to change the font and the border sizes on each text box to catch attention and keep the audience captivated while reading. Finally a list of reasons is listed in the middle of the poster to convince the audience. One bullet appealing to the family and the emotions that come with protecting them. Another bullet refers to the vaccine being free which   appeals to everyone financial situation because they have nothing to lose as they pay nothing. Along with the other reasons the objective is to convince the reader of this poster to get vaccinated.

There is still a large number of people in this country that still haven't gotten vaccinated and believed they still shouldn't. If things continue like this the pandemic will in reality never be over. There will still continue to be deaths all over the country and we still continue to watch it daily. Unless we come together as a unified country and get vaccinated together we won't be able to defeat the virus. We should not be selfish and only think about our lives but the lives of others as stated on the poster. The majority of the affected victims of Covid are the babies and the elderly and they have gotten vaccinated as they know the serious health risk they are at. Most of the young individuals will not as they think that because they are young they are invincible. In that case the virus might not hit them as hard but rather their grandma or cherished person of older age. This can be prevented, let's all get vaccinated!

Intervention 2

The poster I have done for the second intervention is a simple one. It is meant to protest against pollution. As we all know, pollution is a problem in today's society, responsible for global warming and harm to life. Even though it is a problem, most high ranking members of society choose to ignore this. The design and simplicity of my poster is meant to capitalize on this. It being done on notebook paper represents the sense that we should not have to talk about this topic, but we must. The text simply saying "No More Pollution" is meant to give off the appearance of a child writing it to give off the sense that even children know that pollution is bad, yet many companies still continue to pollute as a result of their chase for profit. Unfortunately, I was unable to find quotes that connect the poster to the history of protest.

Working Title: Intervention Poster

This is my little post-it note about Asian hate. Recently, Asian hate has begun to become very troubling ever since the Coronavirus began. This stemmed from the fact that the Coronavirus began in Wuhan City in China. This hate began to escalate due to the new norms placed on Americans like the mask mandate, and the 4 month-long quarantine which felt like 4 years. Americans were angry and had to place the blame on someone so they began harassing Asians in public and assaulting in some instances. Many Americans felt suppressed because of the restrictions placed on them. However, it is never right to redirect that hate towards a group of people. "The pursuit of individual happiness has been acknowledged as a universal right. Yet the existing social conditions make the individual feel powerless" (Berger 148). Asian hate even occurred when I was a senior in high school. Around February, a month before the mandated quarantine began an individual began making fun of Asians for eating bats, I called her out on it saying that "she has no right to badmouth other cultures and to shut up. Your laugh sounds like the hyena you are." I'm sorry, she was the only person I had trouble with in high school, and her laugh really did sound like a hyena. Yet in a sudden moment of hopelessness, I had gained a sense of pride and courage. I wasn't at all the kind of person to talk back to people, but it just happened.

This was the first time I've actually felt like I had to do something, to intervene against what she was saying. I did explain that she was wrong afterward but the feeling of having to make a change stuck with me since that day, "these things present as opposed to represent is not an accident" (Thomson 98). I think that this quote means how political art presents the problem at hand, they are showing us that there is a problem and we need change. Asian hate or any racial-related hate in fact should be completely erased. We had the civil rights movement during the 60s which was one of the greatest movements in our history. We've identified the problem and made changes, how hard is it to change?

My body, my choice, is a feminist slogan that has been used in several nations, usually about issues of bodily autonomy and abortion. Many protesters today explain the fact to mind your own business regarding abortions and women's decisions. When I went to a protest to listen to the women, they had valid points about whether or not abortions should be considered murder or still be considered a medical procedure. However, I agree that the government should have no say-so over having the decision of any medical procedure given to women for their health mentally and physically. The argument is a one-sided explanation that abortions are meant for women who do not want their children, but they can be for women whose body is physically unable to bear the child full term. Many today do not look at the outcome of what could happen if making abortions illegal become a way of law. Women are gentle creatures, and when they are forced to keep or go through something, that will raise a massacre of damaging issues like suicide, illegal abortion, depression, or even death for those who can not go full term. I just want the government to understand that you will hurt more than do good if you put an act to do with a woman's physical, mental, and verbal beliefs. "She assured everyone on the tour that we do not have to subscribe to anyone else's idea of success." (Kimberly drew). Everyone has their own way and path. When it comes to this subject yet forces the association with a stern word like murder. For my poster, I will out flyer say, "mind your own biology giving the force front of what I tend to do with my body should pertain the government.

Intervention Poster for the Endangered species

Throughout the years the temperatures have been increasing. With the temperatures rising the waters are rising as well. Because of the glaciers melting, ice caps melting, the oceans are growing. They might not be rising as fast as they may seem but whenever this is brought up it makes a lot of people uncomfortable due to the fact that people aren't being self aware. Because their day to day doesn’t consist of anything out of the ordinary, such as littering or dealing with the animals themselves, they think they aren’t doing anything but we need to. It's our job to protect the only planet we can live on and protect the animals that live on it as well. They can’t speak so we must speak for them. Polar bears rely heavily on sea ice for traveling, hunting, resting, and mating and they are such beautiful creatures above all. But because of ongoing and possible loss of their sea ice habitat, climate change, is a threat to polar bears. Polar bears were listed as a threatened endangered species in 2008. We are now in 2021 and as of now have prolonged the extinction to our best abilities. As the polar bears sea ice habitat recedes, polar bears are spending longer periods on land, where they often go to areas where humans live. In order for everything to live, happy bears… humans… animals we can’t live in the same place as one that’s crazy. So if we don’t want to live with them we need to save them and protect their homes. As of now I don’t think it’s totally IMPOSSIBLE but at the rate we’re going it’s hard to say. With that being said one of the quotes that really ties in with this is by Siegler it states them saying, “The question is not whether we will be extremist but what kind of extremist will we be.”( Siegler) This alone is a powerful quote but like said before a lot of people don’t think they are at fault we need people that are going to put that aside and help the endangered whither or not it’s their fault. The problem is happening right infront of our eyes and we are the only ones that can stop it it only takes one person, one extremist, to make a change for good.

I feel strongly about the growing disparity of the 1% in comparison to the rest of society. Around 70% of all wealth in the U.S. .This core issue intrinsically ties into many other issues such as discrimination against deprived groups of people, environmental destruction, and general corruption. Finding a way to crack down on these wealth criminals is an important way of maintaining some form of balance in the meantime. With the current protests regarding John Deere, and many other workers are realizing the value of their labor. “The Tute Bianche first appeared in Italy in 1994 in the midst of a social setting in which the “mass laborer,” who had played a central role in the 1970s in production and in labor struggles, was gradually replaced in the transition to precarious post-Fordist means of production.”

In my research of protests in the past, I find that an effective slogan or phrase can be very helpful in spreading an idea. For instance Barbra Kruger’s work has the common through-line of a clear but provocative statement. Kruger discusses the need to understand the intersectionality of these issues in her interview with Art21 magazine. “There is always a connection between issues of race and gender and class. They don’t ever exist separately, and people who feel that they live them separately are really not understanding the multiple forces that have impacts on their identity and their lives.”.  A good slogan should be instantly recognizable in intention, and meaning. “Black Lives Matter” is effective in it’s boldness.

Using a pig as shorthand for the obscenely wealthy is nothing new but effective nonetheless. Pig imagery has existed for a long time so utilizing that to make the piece easy to digest. Using a cartoon style pig with a top hat and teacup  to make it more palatable, and inviting.

For this project, I chose to do  end Gentrification.

I did this because I think its crazy how over the past few years the cost of housing in NJ has sky rocketed. Better houses have been built and even better parks, roads are being reconstructed and more resources being provided. Even new schools have been built but at what price? the former Jersey City inhabitants for example are being pushed out of their homes due to the high cost of living. The rent has skyrocketed. The new inhabitants are mostly people who have also been pushed out of NY due to the high cost of living there.

as John Berger says in his book ways of seeing, "Money is life..... those who  lack the power to spend money become literally faceless." This deeply relates to how those that earn low wages are being ignored and opportunities being created for those that can afford it.

In this poster, If neighborhoods are nice then no one should be pushed out. I wrote the poster as a protest against Gentrification and used different colors to show that every person should be included.

I also included # end gentrification just to give people and idea of what am talking about as sometimes people do not even realize what gentrification is....I didn't until I heard the word and searched it up.

Fight for What's Right - Poster

Fight for What's Right

The climate of the world we live in today doesn't allow for activism to flourish the way it should. Those who fight onwards, to reach their goals, make the world a better place, are ostracized, beaten down, and are made to believe that what they want, the very thing everybody should want -- Peace, is impossible to achieve. Despite this, there are dedicated people who make sure that no matter how harsh the going gets, they will never stop fighting. Ever. I am inspired by those who put their lives on the line to support a cause, and while I've never been in their shoes, this intervention is, for now, a metaphorical toe dip into protest/activist art.

An Invisible Hand by The Water

When I first introduced myself in this course, I made it clear that film was something I enjoyed analyzing for the sake of discovering activist messages. Photography is no different, and as one can tell, I wanted my piece, titled Fight for What's Right, to bask in the sun on campus. The Black Lives Matter symbol of the raised fist was my immediate thought, the iconography gripping me since I first saw it, and given the opportunity to express myself visually, the plague of racism was the cause I knew I had to cover in this assignment.

Leafy Display

John Berger's talk on images and how we react to them was another inspiration behind why I chose to do the piece the way I did. The formation of four fists, one invisible, with the implication that someone may put their fist there. The piece is interactive, and while I have no images of anyone making use of that, it is an image I'd like to capture one day. John Berger said in his book, Ways of Seeing, that "One may remember or forget these messages but briefly one takes them in, and for a moment they stimulate the imagination by way of either memory or expectation."(129)

A Piece in The Sun

The Black Lives Matter imagery is something that we will continue to see for years to come, and one that I will continue to support as that time blows ahead. The photography aspect of it is one that media loves to use in news reports or online reports, depending on where someone looks. In a recent reading of Signs of Resistance, we saw further how visuals can apply to the world as we know it. In 1955, Emmett Till was murdered, and the Civil Rights Movement started. In Signs, Siegler writes "The anger and outrage over Emmett Till's murder was one of the catalysts that sparked the Civil Rights Movement. And it was all because of a photo."(60)

I will continue to fight for what's right because my skillset allows me to do it in a specific way, one that others may not be able to. This is something I love to see in signage at protests, a personal, handmade production that is meant to show that the pen and paper can really make a difference... This how I fight, and others will continue to fight until the end of time.

Intervention Poster

For my poster, I really wanted to talk about how women are treated. But more specifically about how women's bodies are looked at sexually along with their age and choice of clothing. Since we were young, we were told to cover up our shoulders and to not have our skirts pass our fingertips in school. This rule is a dumb one due to people being distracted anyway without the need of telling females to cover up. When women are even covered up with an oversized sweats and hoodie for example, they were still victims of sexual assault. What we wear isn’t consent or means that “we are asking for it” since we wear want for ourselves and not for others so it doesn't give others the right to do stuff without communicating it through us first. Also, if the men were ever taught to watch what they say and not think so provocatively towards women and actually respect them, then this wouldn’t be an issue. They sexualize everything when it comes to women like boob sizes, butt size, thick thighs for example. Even if our nipple is showing through our t-shirt that everyone has, is even sexualized.

In John Berger’s book, “Ways of Seeing” it states, “Publicity increasingly uses sexuality to send any product or service” (144). This quote relates to how in most commercials that involve selling a product usually includes women half-dressed due to it catching more people’s attention to want to buy it. Even if the product didn’t include those women, then the products would still sell the same way. Another quote but from Bell Hooks in “Understanding Patriarchy” states, “Patriarchy is a political-social system that insist that males are inherently dominating, superior to everything and everyone deemed week, especially females, and endowed with the right to dominate and rule over the weak and to maintain that dominance through various forms of psychological terrorism and violence” (18). Men have been designed from birth into thinking that they can do whatever they want and treat women however without any consequences. Along with that, they see women as something that they can control and someone to take advantage of when they don’t get their way.

The quotes on the poster are some that were either said to me or heard from others that I thought were important to include since others may have also heard it. One of the pictures on the poster, I feel so strongly about due to hearing it from my parents before. Back then I didn’t see it as them trying to protect me but them trying to control me but in reality, they just didn't want me to be sexualized from men at such a young age.

My project is based on pollution. People on daily are know to litter and just throw their garbage on the ground without a single thought of what that can cause to the earth. People sometimes can be very lazy and throw trash on the ground instead of just walking to the nearest trashcan. Many people don’t understand that trash left on the ground and not put in its proper place can lead to the whole planet being polluted. This happens all over the world and in other parts of the world, the pollution can be extremely bad. There can be papers, bottles and even garbage left out on the street. This can also affect the wildlife in the area as they can think that the garbage is food. This can also attract rodents and insects. Nobody likes insects and rodents in their homes or in their streets. These creatures sometimes can bring diseases, viruses and even mold. Many rodents can also be infected with parasites such as tapeworms which are very dangerous. It is up to us humans to come together to take care of our surroundings and our planet. This is our only planet, and we should do our best to come together to take care of it. We shouldn’t let it go to waste by doing something such as leaving garbage on the street. We could easily take care of our planet by making sure we are throwing out our garbage and cleaning up when we see garbage out in the streets, we can pick it up and put it in the proper place. Reminding each other to pick up trash can also be beneficial because it can remind people about what can happen if leave too much garbage and trash lying around.

A quote that inspired my project was from Civil Rights by Siegler “The question is not whether we will be extremist but what kind of extremist will we be… The South, the nation and the world are in dire need of creative extremists.” (Siegler)This quote inspired me to because it is a message to the world that we need extreme activists who will be able to change the world’s view about a world problem. Another quote that help inspire my project was by John Berger “Publicity is the culture of the consumer society.”(Berger 139).  This quote helped me understand that publicity is something that everyone uses to get a point across or to try and sell something. Publicity is the best way to get people informed about pollution and the problems it can cause worldwide.

Intervention Poster

Female sticker on pole.

Using clear packing tape, wax paper from my kitchen, and a handful of paint and alcohol markers, I created a series of low-budget stickers to spread feminist messages around my town. The end goal aim I had, eventually, was to make my intervention a combination of two of the main sources we cover in class, Kimberly Drew’s story in This Is What I Know About Art, and the Guerilla Girls group. Truthfully, at first, I had only wanted to create a couple simple straight-forward stickers decorated with common messages you hear from feminist movements that I can spread around. Not to say the simple things can’t be impactful, I just didn’t have anything specific to say, and wanted to make my project clear-cut. Kimberly Drew included in her book “... She asked me to think about what I wanted to say, and, more importantly, how I wanted it to be interpreted.” (This is What I Know About Art.) While this quote refers to a specific situation she found herself in, the words she writes are valuable. So, I took a page out of her book, literally, and created a few more stickers about female artists and creatives. The Guerilla Girls have been spreading messages about female artists for a much longer and worthwhile time, and while I couldn’t do something as magnificent, I included a few stickers reminiscent of them. The black and white text stickers specifically. Instead of getting rid of the stickers I already made, I just included the old and new ones together.
Since my stickers are relatively small individually, they may seem a bit too different from another when looking closely. Like, each sticker is part of a different series. However, I feel that when you consider all the stickers together, they form one very clear image. “Despite the contemporary visionary feminist thinking that makes clear that a patriarchal thinker need not be a male, most folks continue to see men as the problem of a patriarchy. This is simply not the case. Women can be wedded to patriarchal thinking and action as men.” (Understanding Patriarchy.) Together, the stickers rebel against patriarchal thinking in a general sense.
After creating these stickers, I quickly got rid of them. Some of these stickers were eventually put up where it was able, to be seen and interacted, in a public space. And some were given away directly to the public for  strangers to keep.

Intervention Poster

I chose to make my protest poster about the topic of illegal immigration. It’s a very important topic to me and has an impact on my life as well as close friends. When people think of illegal immigration the first group that comes to mind are Hispanics and Latinos. It’s due to this that many people constantly harass Hispanic and Latinos by calling them “illegals” and telling them to go back to their own country. However, people constantly fail to realize that illegal immigration is something that started way before Hispanics. People seem to forget that Christopher Columbus is the king of illegal immigration by coming over and “discovering” America resulting in the tragedies done to the Native American people. With this poster I hope that it creates a conversation about illegal immigration and the way people view Hispanic and Latino people because of these harmful stereotypes against us. I think signs for protests are extremely important because those help get the message across. I feel that if someone were to read just the right sign at a protest or any sort of movement, they could get inspired by the words that are written down. So many signs are cleverly written that help people who may not understand the movement finally understand and they could possibly try to join in as well. I’m proud of the poster that I made and I hope that I was truly able to spark a conversation between people who have strong opinions about this topic and hopefully change the perspective of others.

I think that the quotes from John Bergers’ “Ways of Seeing” greatly captures the idea as to why publicity for protest art is something important. The first quote is, “Publicity turns consumption into a substitute for democracy” (pg. 11). This quote connects to our assignment because protesting can cause people to consume what message is attempting to say and reach the people. Especially with social media being so influential toward people, it’s a big influence when it comes to big consumers. The second quote is, “Publicity exerts an enormous influence and is a political phenomenon of great importance” (pg: 13). I feel that this quote perfectly summarizes as to why protesting is so important. With great publicity for a movement or a protest of any kind, people can feel influenced to join in and fight for the cause. If enough people join in, great change can be made.

For my poster I really wanted to emphasize reflection on mental health in the effect of capitalism. Often times people appear well balanced when their struggle with mental health goes much deeper than just individual struggle. This has become so common and prevalent among the Working class that keep capitalism afloat. Mental health struggles can stem from hereditary conditions to an effect of environment. That being said the physical and emotional demands of our position in capitalistic society were not made for people who already struggle with mental health, disabilities or any other factors that cannot be beneficial to exploitation of the working class.

In John Berger ‘ways of seeing’ he states, “the pursuit of individual happiness has been acknowledged as a universal right. Yet the existing social conditions make the individual feel powerless. He lives in the contradiction between what he is and what he would like to be. Either he then becomes fully conscious of the contradiction and it’s causes, and so joins the political struggle for a full democracy, which entails, amongst other things, the overthrow of capitalism; or else he lives, continually subject to an envy which, compounded with his sense of powerlessness, dissolves into recurrent day-dreams.” (Pg 148). To break down what Berger is saying you have to understand that our idea of image is sold to us with publicity and consumerism. To sell things we need to project this idea of a happier more successful you. In order to keep people working to uphold the top beneficials of capitalism we need to be sold this idea that we can either be that beneficiary or be happy being the little guy. But the struggle of being overworked and under payed, the effects of socioeconomic disadvantages, is in constant battle with what we are being sold. Berger suggests that people who realize this either choose to keep this ideal day dream at personal cost, or come to the conclusion that the only fix is a change to the system. In my opinion and experience both drain you mentally in different ways.

In my project the text on the mirror is to allow the viewer to truly reflect on their own state of happiness and struggle. Although the message of why that may be is open ended as a stand alone poster, self reflection on your own mental state may lead to many of the same root issues.

WARNING! people in mirror may be struggling more than they appear.

Too Much! Robert Lach

I chose this piece by Robert Lach because of how much it spoke to me environmentally. I think it introduces new ways to think about subjects like environmental preservation more specifically recycling. I also believe this says a lot about consumer culture and what we give value. The details on this piece give off a very battered, beaten, and abandoned look. The suitcase looks worn out and parts of the house are being held together by thread, when things look like that most people will perceive it as garbage, something with no purpose, a useless novelty to be thrown out but Robert Lach brings it to a light where it can be shown to have purpose.

This concept is actually something people in developing countries/third world countries have been doing for a long time to make their living situation better, add more to their culture or just make light out of a bad situation. In multiple cities across Brazil typically found on the outskirts of said cities you’ll find favelas, they can be known as slums as well. A proponent factor of these favelas forming would be slavery. After they were freed in 1888 they were denied many rights, and ultimately were forced to make their own communities.

The creativity from back then didn’t go away. It’s still very prevalent now, since then Brazil has been industrialized and more favelas have been developed and more have had advancements but their living situation is still nothing compared to the ones that live outside of the favelas. People in the favela’s today are still making use of the “mess” around them and turning it into things like windows for their homes, doors, etc..

One man named Paulo cleaned up an entire hill scattered with garbage and turned it into a garden that can produce fruit. I believe this is something that 1st world countries can learn a lot from, and that it would change us environmentally and our entire philosophy of what’s valuable in our society.

Typically most Americans give value to name brand things like Louis V, Chanel, Gucci, etc.. if we had the same mindset as people in Brazil for example I think it would save people a lot of money and in terms of environmental change people would pick up garbage like no tomorrow. Instead of finding value in stores like Hollister, Zara, Express etc.. people would shop the streets and make the most out of the garbage, the normal unnatural surroundings and ultimately make their environment more natural.

This piece spoke to me in more ways than one, took me out of my comfortable American lifestyle and made me think a little bit more about how I used to live when I was younger and borderline homeless in Newark. It kind of hit me with a different type of nostalgia, and made me see the happiness/beauty in something not meant to be viewed that way.

Poster Intervention due October 20th, 2021

Hudson Park, Bayonne
Fall 2021

Hudson Park, Bayonne
Fall 2021

I decided to do my project on pollution and global warming. As we all know, people litter daily and this hurts our ecosystem. We, as Gen Z, are responsible to fix the problem that the generations before us created. I chose a certain area in my hometown, Bayonne, to post my posters and activism. I chose Hudson Park, located on Avenue A/Boulavard in Bayonne. I chose this location because they have spent hundreds to thousands of dollars on creating a beautiful county park but failed to fix the most breathtaking part of the park: the Hudson River. This river is constantly filled with garbage and it takes away the beauty the park brings. The garbage piles up on the rocks and it attracts rodents. I want the people of my town to recognize this and ask for change. It is time to get started and clean our only home! Though science works on trying to get our populations to Marz and creating a home for us, I do not believe they will complete this in time. We only have one home we can count on and we are destroying it before our very eyes. We are the parasite on the planet and it is slowly choking us out. We need to clean it, nurture it, and care for it like we care for our sick and loved ones.

As said in the past reading, Photography, the photographs we take show the culture of our world, but it also shows the destruction of our world. In my bottom picture, with the green index cards, I tried to take a picture of not just the poster but a bit of the trash that was laying on the rocks. Though there are times where the trash can be worse, I wanted everyone to see a glimpse of what it is we are truly doing to the world. If you did not already know, during the pandemic when we were forced to stay indoors all day for weeks on end, our ozone layer started to fix itself. Why? Because we, humans, did not cause pollution every day. We were not using our vehicles, our factories, or anything that hurts the plants so, with time, it started to heal on its own. We need to understand that some things are worth the cost. We need to switch to things that are healthy for our environment and lower the costs to that everyone, no matter the social status or the money in your pocket, can afford to use products that help heal the planet and our home.

Gallery Exhibition Essay

How much is too much exactly? What is an acceptable measurement to be just right? Just where do things get out of hand? If I drop a package of Mentos in a full two liter bottle of soda, what would happen?  Aside from the last question, all of them can be answered at the gallery at New Jersey City University Too Much curated by Professor Eileen Ferara and Professor Doris Cacoilo. This exihibit show cases how much waste we create everyday and how it can effect us. By using the everyday garbage, the artists in this exhibit have turned them from waste into works of art.

Looking at the art in the exhibit, the biggest, most eye catching, and most amazing piece in the exhibit in my opinion was Illuminous City by artist Poramit Thantapalit. It is made with plastic bottles, LED lights, and video projection, is 120 x 55 x 55 in, and is about $1000. The artist got inspired from the relationship and connection between humans, nature, and the surrounding such as trees, flowers, the ocean, people, and animals. They focus on using recycled and non-recycled materials for their art. They created art in all kinds of mediums such as sculpture, large instillation, photography, drawings, pottery, and much more. The work is made from small parts and goes together like a puzzle. All the pieces can be used to be their own art piece, but could be put together to form the full piece. They can even be put into any order to form a new large piece as opposed to the original intentional one.

This piece is made of over 300 Mountain Dew and 7-Up plastic bottles to make five different pieces and when put together they form a city landscape. The first piece is called Map. This was made from the plastic bottle labels of the bottles, cut, collaged, and taped together to make a city map. It's used as a wall instillation. The second piece is called Complex and is made from the middle part of the bottles, folding them into cubes, and interlocking them to form the landscape. The third is called Window is made from the middle part as well, connecting them together, forming three square window frames, installed on the ceiling. The fourth is called Tower is made from the bottom of the bottles, connected with wires, wrapping them around a wire frame column, with LED lights inside. The fifth is called Tree is made from the top of the bottles including the cap, installed on the ceiling by connecting it together with bottle caps to create tree branches.

Memes (Global Warming/ Climate Change)

One of many problems in the world as of now is Global Warming. The immense amount of air pollution, water pollution, chemicals, etc. When we look at our animal population we tend to see that many animals are going through a lot especially  Polar Bears. Climate change has been affecting the ice causing it to melt and even disappear altogether.  “In an era shaped by the phenomenon known as globalism, the switch towards tactics has been more warmly received outside the U.S. than in it. The lack of visibility, and funding, in the United States obviously contributes to the categorical myopia of interventionist practices in U.S. museums.” Due to this, these animals are starving because they are unable to get the foods that are necessary for their everyday living. Polar bears could go extinct due to gasses in the air that are affecting them.

Activist artists such as, Ruben Orozco Loza, built a sculpture of a young girl’s head in the water to bring to light the many things that could possibly go wrong if we continue to treat our world the way we do. His sculpture brings to light that if we continue to treat our earth wrong we will continue to see rapid effects of the human population’s neglect of our climate. He chose to use the face of a young girl drawing to show that if we do not change our ways we will continue to drown in our actions.
