The Interventions: Trespassing Towards Relevance Homework
Quotes:
· “In an era shaped by the phenomenon known as globalism, the switch towards tactics has been more warmly received outside the U.S. than in it. The lack of visibility, and funding, in the United States obviously contributes to the categorical myopia of interventionist practices in the U.S. museums.”
· “Tactics can be thought of as a set of tools like a hammer, a glue gun, or a screwdriver, they are means for building and deconstructing a given situation.”
Response:
Interventionists bring forward political issues for viewers to see and open their eyes so issues can be addressed. By showing people the issues, individuals will speak up. Interventionists see the worldly issues, speak up through their art, and address said issues because others are too scared to speak or not being heard. These artists look at political and/or worldly problems and create inspiring pieces that will get people talking more and more about the problems. Example: global warming, terrorism.
Understanding Patriarchy
Quotes:
· “Men who have heard and know the word usually associate it with women’s liberation, with feminism, and therefore dismiss it as irrelevant to their own experiences.”
· “The contemporary presence of female-headed households has led many people to assume that children in these households are not learning patriarchal values because no male is present.”
Response:
People base their beliefs and values on gender because of patriarchy, which can make children confused and scared to be who they are. Patriarchal thinking can shape the values of culture. There are many people who still do not know the true meaning of the word “patriarchy”. Furthermore, why do men have to teach patriarchy? Women can do just the same as men and more. It is the women in these households who teach the children more than any of those around. Patriarchy should be taught in school, along with within the household.
There are many tragedies in the world and it is a shame that most are ignored because people do not want to help or get up to do something because “it’s too much work”. Our world is polluted and dying yet no one cares to help. There is still oil in the waters from the DeepWater Horizon tragedy and it affects the sea creatures. The fish and shrimp that are consumed within restaurants can be contaminated from said pollution and yet people still devour it like nothing ever happen. Things like this need to be discussed more.
