John Berger Ways of Seeing Ch7
Quote #1: “Publicity persuades us of such a
transformation by showing us people who have apparently been transformed and
are, as a result, enviable.”
-
Envy is something that is talked about a
lot within the reading. With those who are wealthy being the target of the
envy. Those who have everything becoming enviable to those who long for a life
like theirs. Publicity makes the average person wish for transformation in
their life to become the ones who are envied.
Quote #2: “(Publicity) It suggests that if he buys
what it is offering, his life will become better. It offers him an improved
alternative to what he is.”
-
Many people become fooled by the publicity
and what it suggests to those who want more out of their life. Items are
advertised to look as if they’re making life easier for the consumer. It makes
it seem like that by buying the product that is being sold, the life of that
who purchases it will have a better life compared to what their life is like
now.
Susan Sontag excerpt from “On Photography”
Quote #1: “To collect photographs is to collect the
world.”
-
I really love this quote because when
people take photos of any experiences they have, they manage to capture it with
photos. Anywhere someone goes, they take photos in order to remember their time.
Photos collect the beauties of the world and keep memories alive.
Quote #2: “Finally, the most grandiose result of the
photograph enterprise is to give us the sense that we can hold the whole world
in our heads—as an anthology of images.”
-
With photography becoming a grand way for
us to see places around the world and view the experiences of many people
across the globe.
